Sparky McEwen knew that it would be a challenge when he took the Davenport head coaching job. The university had just joined the GLIAC and his job was to build the program from the ground up. In his introductory press conference, he said; “We have a lot of work to do as we venture into the toughest conference in the nation, but I am ready for the challenges ahead.” Those challenges have been massive. From a 1-10 first season to Covid putting a halt on the program. McEwen has been able to persevere through this, and you see it in his teams. He has led Davenport this season to its best start in program history, and the first ranking in the Division 2 Top 25 ranking.

McEwen is from the Grand Rapids area, playing in high school at the now-closed-down Grand Rapids Creston. He is one of the people who knew how important bringing football back to Grand Rapids is. After his college career at Ferris State, he played for a year for the now-extinct Grand Rapids Rampage Arena Football team. He went back to his high school and led them to some of their best seasons ever including the school’s first-ever state championship appearance. He then coached in the Arena Football League from 2001-2010 with the Rampage and with the Oklahoma Yard Dawgz. He went back to his alma mater Ferris State where coached the wide receivers from 2012 to 2016 before taking the Davenport job.

Now in year 6, McEwen has the program right where he wants it, in position to win their first GLIAC title. But that won’t be easy with #24 Saginaw Valley State, #6 Ferris State, and #1 Grand Valley State still left on the schedule. With the rich tradition that Davenport has had with some other sports like basketball, Sparky is ready to add football to that list.
