Central Michigan University announced in May that it was cutting men’s track and field.
That move left the University’s NCAA Division 1 status in limbo because it put them under the required amount of men’s teams a Division 1 school has to offer (6, cutting men’s track made it 5).
Central Michigan had two choices, either add an inexpensive program like men’s golf to comply with the NCAA or apply for a waiver from the NCAA.

CMU applied for the waiver to bypass NCAA bylaw 20.9.9.1
On June 4, Central Michigan announced that it will remain at the NCAA division 1 level despite being under the required amount of men’s teams. See the announcement via Twitter:

CMU has until the end of the 2021-2022 academic year to add another men’s program.
